Mustangs Suffer First Loss at Stillwater
Ponies’ Depth too Much to Overcome
The Mounds View Mustangs swim & dive team traveled to Stillwater on Thursday, January 7 for their first away meet of the season and fell to the Ponies by a score of 92-84. The Mustangs put up a good effort with several swimmers posting season’s best times, but couldn’t provide much of a challenge to the deep and talented hosts who won all 12 events on the evening program.
The Ponies jumped out to a 12-2 lead with a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The Mustang quartet of freshman Jared Martini, eighth grader Isaac Pan, sophomore Quinn Doan and senior co-captain Josh Peterson was third in 1:48.77. The Ponies swept the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle, with junior co-captain Albert Pan claiming fourth in 1:55.22, while senior Leo Rossi was fifth in 2:01.80. Isaac Pan was the top finisher for the Mustangs in the 200-yard individual medley with a third place swim of 2:09.62. Josh Peterson was fifth in 2:19.63. In the 50-yard freestyle, Martini’s swim of 24.58 was good enough for second, while sophomore Kyle Peterson touched the wall in fourth in 25.16. At this point in the meet, the Ponies led 47-15.
The Mustangs had a 3-4 finish in the diving well. Freshman Josh Bowman tallied 131.30 points on the one-meter board to claim third, while fellow freshman Tad Tomczyk’s 115.5 points earned him a fourth place finish. Doan had a 57.01 swim to claim third in the 100-yard butterfly, with sophomore Atakan Yurttas clocking a 1:04.98 to finish fifth. In the 100-yard freestyle, Albert Pan clocked a 52.04 to finish second with Josh Peterson right behind in 52.82 to claim third. The Ponies swept the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle. Isaac Pan was fourth for the Mustangs in 5:21.48, while Rossi was fifth in 5:48.87. At this point, Stillwater led by a score of 92-34 and swam the remainder of the program as “exhibition,” with points earned not counting towards the final score.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of freshman Ian Boyles, Doan, Kyle Peterson and Albert Pan took second place with a time of 1:40.17. Martini had a good swim in the 100-yard backstroke with a 1:01.56 clocking, which was good enough for second. Junior Noah Vranyes was fifth in 1:06.69. Doan swam to a 1:07.92 to finish second in the 100-yard breaststroke, while freshman Will Goldman’s 1:13.93 earned him a fifth place finish. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the quartet comprised of the Pan brothers, Martini and Josh Peterson had the second fastest time of 3:34.43.
In junior varsity competition, the Ponies prevailed by a score of 97-51. Individual event winners for the Mustangs were eighth grader Alex Bonsanger (diving) and sophomore Thomas Wilkowske (100 Free & 100 Back).
