Mustangs Drop Dual Meet to East Ridge

Another Tough Night for the Mustangs

 

The Mounds View Mustangs hosted the East Ridge Raptors at the Chippewa Middle School pool on† Tuesday, January 12 in a dual meet and came away on the short end of a 96.5 - 84.5 score. The deep and experienced Raptors won 9 of 12 events on the program, including all three relays, to overpower the young Mustangs.† The Mustangs were led by senior co-captain Josh Peterson who won both sprint freestyle events, while sophomore Quinn Doan also recorded a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.

 

The Raptors jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the opening 200-yard medley relay with a 1-3 finish. The Mustang quartet of freshman Jared Martini, eighth grader Isaac Pan, Doan and junior Noah Vranyes was second in 1:49.96.† The Raptors finished 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle, with senior Leo Rossi claiming third in a seasonís best time of 1:57.73. Junior co-captain Albert Pan and sophomore Kyle Peterson were fourth and fifth in 1:58.36 and 2:05.38, respectively. In the 200-yard individual medley, Isaac Pan touched the wall in second place with a time of 2:11.96, while Vranyes claimed fourth in 2:18.28.

 

Josh Peterson won his first event of the evening with a seasonís best swim of 23.55 in the 50-yard freestyle. Martini clocked a 24.90 to claim third, while freshman Will Goldmanís seasonís best 25.14 was good enough for fifth.† At this point in the meet, the Raptors led 36-26.† But, they doubled their lead to 49-29 with a 1-2-3 sweep in the diving well.† Freshman Tad Tomczyk was fourth on the one-meter board with a seasonís best 6-dive score of 136.65.† Freshman Josh Bowman was close behind with 129.70 points to nail down fifth place.

 

Doan had a nice swim of 57.12 to win the 100-yard butterfly.† Rossi swam the event for the first time this season and claimed third in 1:02.54.† Josh Peterson proceeded to win the 100-yard freestyle in a seasonís best time of 52.19, while freshman Ian Boyles tied an East Ridge swimmer for fourth in 56.34.††† In the 500-yard freestyle, Albert Pan was third in 5:27.39 and sophomore Jason Lou was fifth in 5:44.80.

 

The Raptors had another 1-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Mustang quartet of sophomore Boyles, Isaac Pan, Rossi and Kyle Peterson claimed second in 1:42.31. In the 100-yard backstroke, Martini had a second place finish of 1:02.62, while freshman Coby Lessard was fourth in a seasonís best time of 1:04.34.† At this point in the meet, the Raptors had a comfortable lead at 96.5 Ė 59.5 and they swam the rest of the meet as ďexhibition,Ē with points earned not counting towards the final score.†

 

Doan was second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a swim of 1:08.01.† Isaac Pan was third and Goldman fifth in 1:09.00 and 1:13.39, respectively. Both were seasonís best times.† In the final event of the evening, the Mustangs finished 2-3.† The team of Lou, Martini, Josh Peterson and Albert Pan touched the wall in 3:35.34.† Third place went to the unit of Boyles, Kyle Peterson, Vranyes, and Rossi who swam to a 3:45.72 finish.

 

In junior varsity competition, the Raptors won 88-72.† Individual Mustang winners were sophomore David Severson (200 Free), Boyles (50 Free), eighth grader Jedi Pratt (diving), and sophomore Alex Li (100 Breast).

 

With the loss, the Mustangs evened their record to 2-2 in the Suburban East Conference (SEC). They will travel to Forest Lake on January 21 to take on the Rangers at Southwest JHS, beginning at 6:00 pm.† On January 23, they will compete in the Section 4AA True Team Section meet at Stillwater JHS for a chance to earn a bid to the True Team State meet at the University of Minnesota on Saturday, January 30.
