Mustangs Crush Cretin-Derham Hall in Pool Action

Mustangs Even SEC Dual Meet Record at 3-3

 

The Mounds View Mustangs hosted the Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders at the Chippewa Middle School pool on Thursday, January 28 and came away with a convincing 97-82 victory.† The Young Mustangs won 9 of 12 events on the program and were led by senior co-captain Josh Peterson who won both sprint freestyle events.† Sophomore Quinn Doan also won a pair of events, while junior co-captain Albert Pan, freshman Jared Martini and eighth grader Isaac Pan also recorded wins.† Meanwhile, 2 of the 3 Mustangs relay teams also finished first.

 

The Mustangs finished 1-3 in the opening 200-yard medley to take a 10-4 lead.† The winning quartet was comprised of Martini, Isaac Pan, Doan, and Josh Peterson who covered the distance in 1:48.01.† The second unit swam to a 1:55.65 and included freshmen Coby Lessard, Will Goldman, and Max Jytyla, anchored by junior Noah Vranyes.† Albert Pan touched out his CDH opponent to take first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a swim of 1:55.72.† Senior Leo Rossi took third with a seasonís best 1:56.78 and sophomore Kyle Petersonís 2:04.14 was good enough for fourth. This made the score 21-9 in favor of the Mustangs they would only continue to build on that lead as the evening progressed.

 

Sophomore Jason Lou claimed second place in the 200-yard individual medley with a seasonís best swim of 2:17.06, while Vranyes was third in 2:21.08.† Josh Peterson clocked a 23.78 to pick up his first win of the evening in the 50-yard freestyle. Freshman Ian Boyles was third and Martini fifth in 24.36 and 24.65, respectively.† At the diving break, the Mustangs led 38-23.

 

In the diving well, the Mustangs had a 2-3-4 finish.† Freshman Josh Bowman had his seasonís best performance to date on the one-meter board by recording 135.25 points to claim second.† Freshman Tad Tomczyk tallied 127.75 points to take third, while eighth grader Alex Bonsanger finished fourth with 106.70 points. Doan posted his first win of the evening in the 100-yard butterfly with a nice swim of 56.77.†† Jytyla was fourth in 1:06.73 and sophomore Eric Pham claimed fifth in 1:06.92. The Mustangs claimed the top two spots in the 100-yard freestyle with Josh Peterson touching first in 53.00.† Albert Pan was on his heels with a 53.35 clocking, while Boyles finished in 54.96 to nail down fourth place. At this point in the meet, the Mustangs led by a score of 68-40.†

 

Isaac Pan touched out his CDH rival in a close race to take first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:21.03. Rossi was third in a seasonís best 5:29.60 and Lou was fourth in a seasonís best time of 5:31.16.† The Mustangs proceeded to finish 2-3 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.† The second place quartet was comprised of Doan, Goldman, Rossi and Albert Pan.† Doanís lead-off 50 Free was a seasonís best 24.45 for him.† Third place went to the unit of Kyle Peterson, sophomore Atakan Yurttas, Lou, and Boyles who touched the wall in 1:39.74.†

 

The locals proceeded to clinch the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard backstroke.† Martini claimed first in a seasonís best 1:01.74.† Lessard was second in 1:05.75, while Vranyes claimed fourth in 1:06.61.† At this point, the Mustangs lead was 97- 57 and the locals swam the last two events as exhibition, meaning any points earned are not counted in the final score.† In the 100-yard breaststroke, Doan picked up his second win with a 1:08.05 clocking.† Goldman was third in 1:13.30 and sophomore Alex Li was fourth in a seasonís best 1:14.61.† In the final event of the evening, the Mustangs finished 1-2 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.† The quartet of Albert Pan, Rossi, Martini, and Josh Peterson finished in 3:37.84.† The second unit was comprised of Lou, Vranyes, Yurttas, and Isaac Pan who touched the wall in 3:44.92.

 

In junior varsity competition, Mustangs defeated the Raiders, 98-40.† Individual Mustang winners were sophomore Derek Chen (200 Free), eighth grader Will Quackenbush (50 Free), eighth grader Jedi Pratt (diving), Yurttas (100 Fly), Kyle Peterson (100 Free), sophomore David Severson (500 Free), sophomore Thomas Wilkowske (100 Back) and Jytyla (100 Breast).

 

The Mustangs are now 3-3 in the Suburban East Conference (SEC) dual meet standings. Their next opponent will be the Woodbury Royals who will host the Mustangs at Woodbury HS on Thursday, February 4.† The meet begins at 6:00 with diving completion held at the same location.
