Mustangs Drop Pool Decision to Woodbury
JV Mustangs Pick up a Nice Win
The Mounds View Mustangs swim & dive team traveled to Woodbury on Thursday, February 4 to take on the Royals in a Suburban East Conference (SEC) dual meet.† The hosts won 9 of 12 events on the evening program on their way to a 104-82 win over the young Mustangs.† Junior co-captain Albert Pan won the backstroke, while sophomore Quinn Doan picked up a win in the butterfly.† The Mustangs 400-yard freestyle relay team was also victorious. The Mustang JV squad edged the Royals by a score of 79-73.
The Royals took a 10-4 lead with a 1-3 finish in the 200-yard medley relay.† The Mustang quartet of freshman Jared Martini, eighth grader Isaac Pan, Doan, and freshman Ian Boyles was second in 1:48.54.† In the 200-yard freestyle, Albert Pan swam to a 1:55.91 to claim second place. Senior Leo Rossi was third in 1:57.84, while sophomore Jason Lou took fifth place in 2:00.77.† Isaac Pan was the top finisher for the Mustangs in the 200-yard individual medley with a second place swim of 2:12.13. Junior Noah Vranyes was third in 2:20.19 and Martiniís 2:21.47 was good enough for fourth place. At this point in the meet, the score was close at 25-21 in favor of the Royals.
The Royals started to pull away with a sweep of the top three places in the 50-yard freestyle. Senior co-captain Josh Peterson swam to a 23.77 to claim fourth place, while eighth grader Will Quackenbush was fifth in 24.07. The hosts earned another seep in the diving well and pushed their lead to 51-27.† Freshman Josh Bowman was fourth with a seasonís best 149.65 points on the one-meter board. Freshman Tad Tomczyk claimed fifth with 129.95 points.††
Doan won the 100-yard butterfly with a seasonís best time of 55.61. Sophomore Atakan Yurttas was fifth†† in 1:04.11.† Quackenbush posted a seasoní best time of 52.42 in the 100-yard freestyle to finish second.† Josh Peterson was fourth in 52.50 and Boyles claimed fifth in 55.29.† The Mustangs had a 2-3-4 finish in the 500-yard freestyle.† Isaac Pan was second for the Mustangs in 5:25.10. Lou was third in 5:32.65, with Rossi right behind in fourth in 5:33.61.† Heading into the second relay event, Woodbury led the meet, 76-50.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of Quackenbush, Doan, Rossi, and Josh Peterson touched the wall in a seasonís best time of 1:36.25 to finish second.† Albert Pan won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.83.† Martini was second in 1:02.46 and freshman Coby Lessard was fifth in 1:04.94.† Doan swam to a 1:08.02 to finish second in the 100-yard breaststroke, with freshman Will Goldman tying his seasonís best time of 1:12.86 to finish third.† In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the unit comprised of Quackenbush, Rossi, Albert Pan, and Josh Peterson swam to an easy win with a seasonís best 3:32.28 clocking.†
In junior varsity competition, the Mustangs narrowly defeated the Royals 79-73. Individual event winners for the Mustangs were sophomore David Severson (200 Free & 500 Free), sophomore Kyle Peterson (50 Free & 100 Free), sophomore Eric Pham (100 Fly), and sophomore Thomas Wilkowske (100 Back).
With the loss, the Mustangs drop to 3-4 in SEC standings, with one dual meet remaining on the schedule. They will host the Roseville Raiders on Thursday, February 11 at 6:00 pm at the Chippewa Middle School pool.† Diving competition will take place at Spring Lake Park HS, beginning at 4:00 pm. At this meet, the Mustangs will honor their four seniors.
