Mustangs Trounce Roseville in Season Finale
Mustangs Finish SEC Dual Meet Season at 4-4
The Mounds View Mustangs hosted the Roseville Raiders at the Chippewa Middle School pool on Thursday, February 11 and turned in dominating performance on Senior Night on the way to a 136-49 victory.† The Mustangs won 11 of 12 events on the program and were led by senior co-captain Josh Peterson who won both sprint freestyle events.† Junior co-captain Albert Pan and sophomore Quinn Doan both also won a pair of events, while freshman Jared Martini and eighth grader Isaac Pan also recorded wins.† Meanwhile, all three of the Mustangsí relay teams also finished first. Following the meet, the Mustangs honored their four senior swimmers, co-captains Marshall Mastenbrook and Josh Peterson, along with Leo Rossi and Errol Sadca.
The Mustangs finished 1-2 in the opening 200-yard medley relay to take a 12-2 lead.† The winning quartet was comprised of Martini, Doan, Josh Peterson and eighth grader Will Quackenbush who touched the wall in 1:48.65.† The second unit covered the distance in 1:53.71 and included freshmen Coby Lessard, Will Goldman and Ian Boyles and Isaac Pan.† The Mustangs then proceeded to take the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle.† Albert Pan was first in 1:55.14.† Rossi swam to a seasonís best 1:56.26 to claim second, while sophomore Kyle Peterson was third in 2:05.04.† This made the score 25-5 in favor of the Mustangs they would only continue to build on that lead as the evening progressed.
Isaac Pan swam to a 2:10.64 to win the 200-yard individual medley.† Junior Noah Vranyes was third in a seasonís best 2:16.67 and Martini was fifth in 2:20.38.† Josh Peterson clocked a 23.78 to pick up his first win of the evening in the 50-yard freestyle. Freshman Ian Boyles was second and Quackenbush was third in 24.13 and 24.22, respectively.† Boylesí time was a seasonís best.† At the diving break, the Mustangs led 48-14.
In the diving well, the Raiders won their only event of the evening.† Freshman Tad Tomczyk had his seasonís best performance to date on the one-meter board by recording 157.85 points to claim second place.† Freshman Josh Bowman tallied 123.80 points to take third, while eighth grader Jedi Pratt was fifth with 89.20 points.† Doan posted his first win of the evening in the 100-yard butterfly with a seasonís best swim of 55.56.† Rossi was second in a seasonís best 1:00.72, while freshman Max Jytyla was fourth in 1:05.23.† The Mustangs then swept the top three spots in the 100-yard freestyle with Josh Peterson touching first in a seasonís best 52.12 for his second win of the meet.† Quackenbush was second in 53.25, while Boyles was third in 54.57.† At this point in the meet, the Mustangs led by a score of 81-29 and the eventual outcome was not in doubt.†
Martini won the 500-yard freestyle with a seasonís best time of 5:27.71. Sophomore Jason Lou covered the same distance in a seasonís best 5:29.69 and sophomore David Severson was fourth in 5:54.95. The Mustangs proceeded to finish 1-3 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.† The winning quartet was comprised of Rossi, Doan, Martini, and Boyles who touched the wall in 1:37.28.† Third place went to the unit of Kyle Peterson, Isaac Pan, Jytyla, and sophomore Atakan Yurttas who finished in 1:42.36.††
The locals swept the 100-yard backstroke with Albert Pan finishing first in 1:00.61 to notch his second win of the evening.† Lessard was second in a seasonís best 1:04.21, while Vranyesí 1:06.86 was good enough for third.† Doan picked up his second win of the evening with a seasonís best 1:06.14 clocking in the 100-yard breaststroke.† Lou swam to a 1:15.03 to claim second, while junior Alan Wang was third in 1:17.86.† In the final event of the evening, the Mustangs finished 1-3 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.† The quartet of Quackenbush, Rossi, Albert Pan, and Josh Peterson finished in a seasonís best 3:31.02.† The second unit was comprised of sophomore Eric Pham, Yurttas, sophomore Thomas Wilkowske, and Kyle Peterson who touched the wall in 3:53.36.
In junior varsity competition, Mustangs crushed Raiders, 106-14.† Individual Mustang winners were Yurttas (200 Free), seventh grader Sam Magnuson (200 IM), Goldman (50 Free), eighth grader Alex Bonsanger (diving), Pham (100 Fly), Kyle Peterson (100 Free), freshman Nate Fatkhiyev (500 Free), Wilkowske (100 Back), and sophomore Alex Li (100 Breast).
The Mustangs finish the Suburban East Conference (SEC) dual meet season with a 4-4 record.† Their next outing will be the JV Conference meet in Stillwater on Saturday, February 20.† The varsity swings into action again at the Section 4AA swimming preliminaries on Thursday, February 25 in Stillwater.
