Mustangs Defeat Roseville for Second Pool Win
Mustangs Depth Too Much for Young Raiders
The Mounds View Mustangs swim team hosted Roseville for their 2017-2018 home opener at Chippewa Middle School on Thursday, December 21 and dominated the Raiders on the way to a 118-58 victory.† The Mustangs won 9 of 12 events on the program to pick up the win and head into the holiday break with a 2-0 record in the Suburban East Conference (SEC). Sophomore Will Quackenbush was a double winner for the Mustangs with wins in both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle. Four other swimmers also recorded first place finishes.† Senor co-captains Jason Lou and Quinn Doan won the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly, respectively. In addition, junior Will Goldman won the 50-yard freestyle, while junior Jared Martini won the 100-yard freestyle.† All three Mustangs relays also recorded wins.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 10-4 lead with a 1-3 finish in the 200-yard medley relay.† The quartet of sophomore Isaac Pan, Goldman, Doan, and senior co-captain Kyle Peterson touched the wall in 1:46.04 to claim first. †The second unit of freshman Sam Magnuson, sophomore Ben Goldman, senior Eric Pham, and senior Atakan Yurttas took third in 1:57.41.† Quackenbush swam to a 1:51.53 to win the 200 Free. †Martini finished second in 1:53.22 and freshman Isaac Landin was fourth in 2:06.27.† In the 200-yard individual medley, Pan claimed second in 2:04.29. Lou was third in 2:14.30, while Magnuson was fifth in 2:25.59.† In the 50 Free, Will Goldman had a swim of 23.25 to win the event.† Junior Ian Boyles was second in 23.55 and Yurttas claimed fourth in 25.04. At the diving break, the Mustangs had the lead at 42-20.
The Mustangs did not compete in diving at this meet and Roseville had only one diver. This tightened the score at 42-26.† This was as close as the Raiders would get for the rest of the evening.† Doan proceeded to win the 100 Fly in 55.73, with junior Max Jytyla taking third in 1:02.40.† Martini clocked a 51.80 to win the 100 Free.† Boyles finished second in 53.45, while Peterson swam to fourth in 54.22. The Mustangs swept the top three spots in the 500 Free behind Quackenbush (5:09.13), Landin (5:43.16), and eighth grader Matthew Shen (5:48.51).† The score was now 76-40, in favor of the Mustangs.
The Mustangs recorded a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay to clinch the meet at 88-42.† The quartet of Will Goldman, Martini, Boyles, and Quackenbush claimed first in 1:33.58.† The second unit of Doan, Pan, sophomore Ryan Lawrence, and Peterson claimed second in 1:34.49.† The Mustangs recorded another 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 Back.† Louís 1:03.31 won the event, with junior Coby Lessard (1:04.50) and Magnuson (1:04.96) completing the sweep. †This made the score 101-45.†
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Pan swam to second in 1:04.91. Will Goldman (1:06.42) and Doan (1:09.02) were fourth and fifth, respectively. The Mustangs closed the meet with a 1-3 finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The winning quartet was Martini, Peterson, Boyles and Quackenbush who touched the wall in 3:34.24.† Landin, Lawrence, senior Thomas Wilkowske, and Lou combined for a time of 3:41.55 to claim third.
In junior varsity competition, the Mustangs easily defeated the under-manned Raiders, 134-29.† Individual event winners for the Mustangs were Willkowske (200 Free, 100 Back), Shen (200 IM), sophomore Jack Valentine (50 Free), Pham (100 Fly), junior Jaymes Andrews (100 Free), eighth grader Andrew Apel (500 Free), and Jytyla (100 Breast).† The JV Mustangs also won all three relay events.
The Mustangs will continue to train over the holiday break with only a few days off.† They return to competition on Thursday, January 4, when they host White Bear Lake at Chippewa, beginning at 6:00 pm.† †††
